"The difference in this film (Caché) is that the manipulation is there to make you aware that you are being manipulated" - Michael Haneke

Monthly update

I just got confirmation the cast is ready to go into production of my experimental film. It will be shot with my trusty Canon and sound will be captured via a Sharp Minidisc MDMT-20, using the pictured omnidirectional Panasonic mic, which records with a 68 dB signal to noise ratio. I love it, but don't have the model number. General mic discussion at hv20.com

I also have two short films lined up to shoot during the hiatus, which may extend itself given the coming holidays.

As for Propaganda, you know why I despise advertising so much? Because only that institution can throw a pile of sh*t at you for years and then call you stinky.

This month's update

What have I've been up to? Meetings with the writers and, yes, business as usual in that regard.

But... I'm actually shooting a very experimental and improvised feature during the hiatus dealing with reality shows.

Soon on a vimeo screen near you and, why not, a few festivals.

Hiatus

Since the screenplay is being reworked, a process which is complex to write about, the blog will go on hiatus until before the shooting date.

In the meantime, I will be writing, in spanish, film reviews for a news site.

Until production begins...

Vimeo groups

Vimeo has several videographer/indie filmmaker groups, some of which I'm part of.

There's the indispensable HV user Canon HV20/30/40, the useful Film School - Filmmaking, the showcase-oriented Short Films and the also interesting Visual/Special FX.

I also joined Audiovisuales Argentina given that there's where I reside.

And if you don't belong to The Best Indie Filmmakers you are a nobody, man.

Filming date set

I had a conversation with Silvio and Alejandro yesterday and we agreed upon a date to start shooting; November of this year. [Edit: the shoot has been pushed to next year].

We want to be able to polish the script and make sure the secondary characters are well developed.

Hey, this is a dramedy/satire, it's tough work!

That means this blog will live on well into next year...

HD capture/render; check

With my trusty old PCMCIA card, I finally managed to both capture and render in full HD, at 1920x1080x32 in the .mov format.

Funny thing is, my lappie (Intel Core Duo, 1 GB RAM) could hardly play the videos afterwards, which I had to watch while pausing a lot.

These are about nine 10 second videos, which are to be used for effects shots for another project. More when After Effects wizard Fede plays around with them.

Understanding Cassavetes

Excellent series of articles from Little White Lies.

Part I Part II Part III

From one of the articles: "If there is ever a quote to sum up the artistic outlook of John Cassavetes, it is this: 'I’ve never seen an exploding helicopter. I’ve never seen anybody go and blow somebody’s head off. So why should I make films about them? But I have seen people destroy themselves in the smallest way…I’ve seen people hide behind political ideas, behind dope, behind the sexual revolution, behind fascism, behind hypocrisy, and I’ve myself done all these things. So I can understand them… We have problems, terrible problems, but our problems are human problems.'"

What's my number

I dropped by the copyright office and we now have an official number for an early draft: 770756.

Also, I registered a mystery sequel of sorts: 770755.

I am obsessed with the dark side of celebrity, with putting people in a pedestal and the people who put them there. It's all a bunch of lies and that's what my two next films will be about; Propaganda, the behind the scenes of an ad agency and its "sequel," Deadly Evidence, a take on emotional contagion propelled forward by a news show.

Think of these things next time you watch an awards show or E! because the True Hollywood Story reaches us all, to some degree or another.
